pH is an important liquid characteristic for many processes that we wish to automate. Zinsser offers pH tools for both measuring and monitoring the pH value and for adjusting the pH to a desired level.
First a pH probe is selected. Various brands and types of probes can be used depending on the requirements of the application. The pH probe is transported to the vials, tubes, or plates than require the measurement by using the robot gripper to transport the probe. The probe is connected to a small pH meter made by Meinsberg that is suitable for integration into automated platforms. Other brands and models of pH meters can be used if desired.
When the pH probe is not being used, it is parked in a special position on the robot deck. In this position the probe is kept in a bottle of buffer to keep it wet. There is also a wash station that rinses and dries the outside of the probe between measurements.
The capability of the pH tool can be expanded by adding pH adjustment capability. The pH adjustment tool includes 2 titration pumps located near the robot, one for delivering acid and one for delivering base. When the pH is measured, the software will determine if acid or base needs to be added in order to reach the target pH (based on the input provided by the user). Once some acid or base has been added the pH will be measured again, and the process will continue until the target pH is reached. A magnetic stirrer can be used if desired to provide mixing after the acid or base is added.
